Preventive care in dentistry means proactively staying on top of your oral health and identifying problems early before they escalate into expensive, painful complications. At ACE Dental of Hewitt, our dentists are committed to providing patients with optimal preventive care, including a thorough examination of the teeth, gums, jawbone, and other oral structures. Patients near and throughout Hewitt, TX have access to cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) or 3D oral imaging, which provides accurate multi-angled scans of the mouth to identify hidden issues early.

What is 3D oral imaging?

CBCT is a form of 3D oral imaging, which scans the entire oral cavity, including the teeth, gums, nerves, jaw, and additional oral structures. While traditional digital x-rays only offer a two-dimensional view, a CBCT provides patients with a highly detailed perspective of their current oral health. At ACE Dental of Hewitt, our team utilizes 3D oral imaging to identify a wide array of dental issues across the age span.

Benefits of 3D oral imaging

3D oral imaging provides patients with numerous benefits, including:

  • Fast, virtually painless scanning that’s uploaded to our computer system for immediate assessment

  • Clear, accurate imaging of the teeth, gums, jawbone, nerves, and other oral structures of the mouth

  • Assessment of the overall bite (beneficial for cosmetic and restorative procedures)

  • Early detection of oral diseases and cancerous tissues

  • Accurate results for tailored treatment plans

What 3D oral imaging may be used for

Our team at ACE Dental of Hewitt recommends utilizing 3D oral imaging for all comprehensive dental examinations. However, 3D oral imaging may be applied in specific cases, including:

  • Assessing jaw development or tooth eruption in small children

  • Identifying tumors, cysts, or other abnormal tissue

  • Measuring oral structures to fit dentures, implants, bridges, or crowns

  • Evaluating the oral cavity for sleep apnea treatment

  • Analyzing areas of the mouth that can’t be properly assessed with two-dimensional scanning

Who should not participate in 3D oral imaging?

Since 3D oral imaging may emit small amounts of radiation, women who are pregnant may not qualify for 3D imaging or may have to take specific precautions. Our dentists will review your medical and dental histories to determine if you can safely participate in 3D oral imaging.

What happens during the 3D oral imaging scan

3D oral imaging scans are conducted like two-dimensional x-rays in one of our private radiology rooms. The patient sits comfortably while the scanner rotates around their head, collecting multiple images in under a minute. Once the scans are completed, the system uploads the images to the dentist’s computer system for assessment.

What happens after my scans come back?

During your routine dental checkup, your dentist will review your 3D oral imaging scans with you and identify any issues or concerns. For some patients, the scans will come back clean and reveal nothing out of the ordinary. If this is the case, the patient is sent home with educational tips to improve dental hygiene habits at home. If the scans reveal areas of concern, we will present your available treatment options and get you scheduled right away.
