what is Obstructive Sleep Apnea?
At ACE Dental of Hewitt, our general dentists proudly offer oral appliance therapy to treat mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). As a common but concerning disorder, OSA causes a person's breathing to stop repetitively throughout the night, often for up to ten seconds or more at a time. This form of sleep apnea results when soft tissues in the back of the mouth become lax and fall into the airways during sleep. OSA results in brief but harmful bouts of oxygen deprivation, which can lead to loud snoring, memory problems, fatigue, high blood pressure, and other concerning issues. Though continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy is a common way to treat sleep apnea, it is not well-tolerated by some patients. In these cases, our team offers custom oral appliances to help minimize the risks of OSA and lessen its symptoms. Learn more about this sleep apnea treatment by contacting our Hewitt, TX team today.

What are the symptoms of Sleep Apnea?
Individuals with severe forms of sleep apnea may not be ideal candidates for a dental appliance solution. For these patients, CPAP therapy might still be the best form of care. But if you are diagnosed with mild to moderate OSA, then oral appliance therapy might offer an effective treatment option. Since sleep apnea can affect your health in myriad ways, it should be addressed by a professional as soon as possible. Some of the more common symptoms of sleep apnea are:
- Loud or frequent snoring
- Choking or feeling short of breath during sleep
- A sore throat or dry mouth upon waking
- Frequent headaches or migraines
- Grogginess or fatigue throughout the ay
- Brain fog or irritability
- Restless sleep or insomnia
How is sleep apnea treated?
Our well-trained dentists treat sleep apnea with an approach known as oral appliance therapy (OAT). This type of oral appliance is referred to as a mandibular advancement device (MAD) and is worn between the top and bottom teeth during sleep. Though a MAD is similar to a night guard or sports mouth guard, it works to gently hold the bottom jaw (mandible) in a more forward position to help keep your airway open. After you receive a sleep apnea diagnosis from your medical doctor, our experts can take impressions of your mouth and send them to a special lab where your custom MAD will be made. You can then return 1 – 2 weeks later to have your oral appliance fitted and to receive instructions on how to wear and care for the device.
How do you care for your oral appliance?
Your mandibular advancement device will be adjusted as needed to help ensure its fit is comfortable and secure. Our team will take the time to explain how your snoring and sleep apnea appliance works and instruct you on how to best clean, maintain, and store it. Please bring your MAD with you to regular check-up visits at ACE Dental of Hewitt so our dentists can monitor its condition. A sleep apnea appliance can help reduce associated health risks, snoring, and other symptoms and improve your quality of rest when it is worn as recommended by our team.
what does an Oral Appliance cost?
Sleep apnea appliances may be covered in part under some dental or medical insurance plans. Our insurance specialist will review your benefits and help maximize your coverage, which may lower the cost of your treatment. ACE Dental of Hewitt strives to make dental care accessible and affordable for all patients and accepts a range of flexible payment options. Please talk with our team for more on these financial solutions or to explore low-interest financing options.
